📖 how to play cribbage

first to 121 wins. each round has 4 mini-phases — deal, discard, peg, count.

deal

2p: 6 cards each · 3p: 5 each + 1 to crib · 4p: 5 each (optionally in 2v2 partnerships).

discard to the crib

everyone sends cards into the dealer's bonus hand (the crib): 2p sends 2, 3-4p sends 1 each. you keep 4 cards.

cut the starter

a card is flipped from the rest of the deck. if it's a Jack, the dealer gets +2 "his heels".

peg toward 31

take turns laying down cards onto a shared running total. you can't go over 31. score on the fly for hitting 15, 31, pairs, and runs (see scoring tab). when nobody can play under 31, the stack resets.

count hands + crib

starting with the player left of the dealer, everyone scores their 4-card hand using the starter as a 5th card. dealer counts last and also scores the crib.

pass the deal

the deal rotates clockwise. first player to 121 wins. skunk = opponent ≤ 90, double skunk = ≤ 60.

every rule below is shown with the actual cards that would score it.

crib scores the same — except a flush requires all 5 cards (incl. starter) to share a suit. card values: A=1, 2–10 face, J/Q/K=10 for sums; runs are A-2-…-K, no wrap.

keep 5s. they make 15 with every 10-value card (10/J/Q/K) — that's 16 of the 52 cards.
watch the cut. if a starter completes a flush or run for you, it's pure upside.
don't lead a 5 if you can help it — most opponents have a 10-card to hit 15 on you.
own crib: dump good combos in. opponent's crib: dump non-adjacent low cards.
perfect 29. three 5s + J in hand + the matching 5 as the starter = highest possible cribbage hand. ~1 in 216k.
say "go" early when you can't reach 31 — you bait the opponent into the +1 instead of busting yourself.
